The Mitten Tree

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

The Preschool and Kindergarten classes are collecting winter hats, mittens and scarves to donate to First Place School in time for the Christmas holiday. First Place School is for homeless children in Seattle, and the winter outer-wear will help them through the cold and wet Northwest winter. This year, the teachers are also collecting gift cards for the families. “Many of the families that come to First Place School are at the end of their rope. They carry their belongings in garbage bags and their children are hungry and many times growing out of their clothes faster than they can keep up. Gift Cards, in amounts of $25.00 each are perfect at one-stop shopping stores such as Target or Fred Meyer or grocery stores such as Safeway or QFC.”

A Mitten Tree will be set up near the Kindergarten classrooms as well as near the Preschool classrooms. Children may hang their donated mittens, mats and scarves on the tree. Gift cards should be given directly to the child’s teacher.

Grade Three

Thursday, December 10 from 2:00-4:00pm

Villa Academy Theater

This year for their service-learning project, the third grade will work to raise money for Orphan’s Hope. This organization provides for orphans in Burma and the Ukraine.  The first goal they have asked us to meet is raising money for their annual Christmas meal at the Garden House orphanage in Myanmar.  There they invite orphans from other orphanages to come for Christmas and share a meal and play games.  The cost is $6 per child.  The cost to give a gift pack (a towel, toothpaste, a toy, etc) to each child is $13.

The first fundraising event for the third grade will be Jump Rope for Hope – a jump-rope-a-thon that will take place on Thursday, December 10 from 2:00-4:00 in the theater.

Grade Three students have each completed a pledge card to raise money for the number of minutes they jump or a flat donation amount to help orphans in Burma.
